Get Your Heart Racing:
Must-Read Medical Thrillers

By Daniel Palmer
My father, Michael Palmer, was a master of the genre. His first book, The Sisterhood, about a secret society of nurses dedicated to euthanasia, is still one of the most beloved medical thrillers ever written.

We all need doctors and nurses, so naturally, this is good fodder for fiction or non-fiction. My father, Michael Palmer, was a master of the genre. His first book, The Sisterhood, about a secret society of nurses dedicated to euthanasia, is still one of the most beloved medical thrillers ever written. He penned eighteen other novels, all with themes around ethical dilemmas, medical conspiracies, and the medical industrial complex gone awry.

I was privileged to write three Michael Palmer medical thrillers after his death: Trauma, Mercy, and The First Family, and the preparation and research for that effort exposed me to the genre like never before. With that introduction, here are my favorite medical thrillers (other than Dad’s, of course) that should be on everyone’s must-read list.

Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton

This novel reads like non-fiction, making it the stuff of nightmares. A team of brilliant scientists races against time to investigate and contain a deadly extraterrestrial microorganism that has arrived on Earth via a crashed satellite. The organism, codenamed the Andromeda Strain, mutates faster than any countermeasure can be deployed, threatening all life on Earth. Scientifically accurate, plausible, and written in Crichton’s taut, keenly observed style, this 1969 classic stands the test of time.

Coma by Robin Cook

The godfather of medical thrillers, Cook’s Coma plunged a chilling IV into the hearts of millions with a premise so simple and insidious that it’s a wonder nobody had thought of it before. What if you go to the hospital for minor surgery and never wake up? It’s such an unforgettable storyline that it became the basis for a blockbuster movie and a TV series, also influencing shows like House, ER, and The Resident.

In addition to Daniel’s recommendations, we’re thrilled to highlight these new medical thriller releases by our members.

Change of Heart by Cristina LePort

Dead via a gunshot wound, medical student Amy Winter has left an organ donation letter in lieu of a suicide note. But Detective Miner and Special Agent Mulville don’t believe she took her own life—especially because a mysterious caller phoned 911 before Amy died. The investigation leads Miner and Mulville deep into the shady world of organ trafficking, cybercrimes, and mob conspiracies.

Cross My Heart by Megan Collins

Rosie Lachlan has had a tough year. After being left at the altar, she receives the life-saving gift of a new heart. She becomes convinced that she and her donor’s husband are meant to be together. She has his wife’s heart, after all. But there are disturbing rumors that Morgan might have had something to do with his wife’s death. Could Rosie be risking her life again?

The Surgeon by Tess Gerritsen

Thanks to Gerritsen’s breakout 2001 novel, we now enjoy the immensely popular Rizzoli and Isles series of police procedurals. But first, we encounter a gripping tale of suspense featuring Dr. Catherine Cordell, a brilliant surgeon with a traumatic past who finds herself in the sights of a killer. In this genre hallmark, readers are taken on a dangerous journey into the devious mind of a murderer, while also gaining insights into how police follow forensic clues and pursue leads, ultimately culminating in an unforgettable climactic finale. This book shouldn’t be missed.

The Hot Zone by Richard Preston

A non-fiction narrative about how deadly viruses like Ebola and Marburg nearly broke free of a monkey lab in Virginia and spread across the United States. This is a true story that reads like a horror novel. Preston’s scientific expertise and storytelling talent immerses us in the world of lethal infections. Readers get up close and personal with organisms that are truly the stuff of nightmares. Read this one with the lights on.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

This runaway bestseller captivated readers all over the world for good reason. The marker of a great story is a relatable character we can root for, coupled with a question we need answered. The Silent Patient delivers on those ideals and more. It centers around a famous painter, Alicia Berenson, who has a perfect life—until she is found standing over her husband’s dead body, covered in blood, with a gun in her hand. Who killed her husband and why? Don’t ask Alicia. She’s stopped talking. So now it’s up to her doctor, Theo Faber, to crack the case. And the end result is one of the most unforgettable twists in all modern thrillers.
